"What Went Wrong" for John McCain

Lately, I enjoy reading more conservative media sources. I don't know if it's because I want to be conservative (deep down inside), or because it makes me laugh a little. So I was browsing the National Review online when i saw this article about why John McCain didn't get elected. This guy stuffed lots of ideas into one article, but I want reactions to the first part, in which he outlines three theories as to "what went wrong." Of course, feel free to read the rest of the article and comment on that as well.

A synopsis of the three theories:
  1. It was a fluke, more to do with recent events/McCain's flaws as a candidate than with the failure of conservatism.
  2. The base was too narrow, the message too exclusionary. McCain was too conservative to appeal to the masses.
  3. Blame McCain's con-lite sell-out. McCain wasn't conservative enough.
Thoughts anyone?
